AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID

Automatic transmission fluid (ATF) is used to transfer rotary motion from the engine to the transmission since there is no direct mechanical link between the two. The ATF must also act as a hydraulic fluid to transmit pressure to various transmission components for shifting. It must carry heat from the transmission to the transmission oil cooler. Finally, it must control friction at the bands and clutches while lubricating bearings and gears.
